Journaling to Unwind Your Mind
My husband and I were chatting last night about the curse of the swirling thoughts. About how easy it is to get caught up in that endless windstorm of thoughts frantically racing around in the circles of your mind.
Know what I mean?
Sometimes that storm wakes us up in the middle of the night and refuses to let us fall back asleep. Other times, it hits us smack dab in the middle of the day - pulling us completely away from the present moment. And, as my husband pointed out to me, more often than not, those spiraling thoughts don’t even hold a candle of significance to what we’re missing in our present moments.
So what can we do to keep those unwanted thought tornados at bay?
I know you won’t be surprised when I give you the answer… altogether now:
JOURNALING!
Don’t get me wrong, there are lots of ways to unwind the mind, but I’ve personally found journaling to be a superhero of a cure.
And I think it comes down to the act of a visual release. When you write your thoughts down, you actually get to see them come out of your mind, your hands, your fingertips, and onto the page. Your words leave your body.
It’s not just releasing your thoughts in an invisible breath. You get to SEE it happen. And not only that, you get to SEE it happen in an organized way. When your thoughts are swirling inside your head, it’s just that: swirling. Spinning chaotically without a way to stop or organize themselves.
But when you write them down, you’re physically ordering those thoughts. You can see the words lined up next to each other. They can make sense and feel more settled.
Ahh! I’m feeling calmer just thinking about how that makes me feel.
Does that all make sense? This week, I encourage you to intentional imagine picking up each of those pesky swirling thoughts inside your brain at any given time, and moving it all the way through your pen tip and onto a piece of paper. Your super awesome and easy journaling prompts this week will help facilitate it all for you. Yay for journaling prompts!
And with that, I hope you enjoy a less “windy” brainstorm of a week 😘
