What Do Colors Say About You?

Have you ever tried to describe your mood using color?

Of course, the most obvious example is feeling blue. But what about when you’re so angry or pent up, you feel bright red? Or the times when you’re bright and yellow.

Plenty of experts have weighed in on this subject. This idea that we’re attracted to different colors depending on what we’re currently feeling. And of course it makes sense! If you crave the taste of chocolate ice cream when you’re feeling down, or the sound of your favorite song when you’re feeling energized, then why wouldn’t you crave the sight of purple when you’re feeling posh?

Check in with yourself right now. Look around your room and let your eyes land on a color or combination of colors that really stands out to you. Soften your gaze for a few beats to just soak in that color. How does it feel in your body? What emotion would you attach to that specific color?

It’s such a simple exercise, but it can bring about a world of insight. Try it at different intervals throughout your day. Start in the morning and see where your eyes land. Then try it again after school drop, lunch, after that yoga class, and before you fall asleep. Let your emotions dictate which colors feel good to you, and see if you can make sense of why.

Journal with colors this week. Put aside your boring black ink pen and instead pull out your markers. Let your eyes fall onto a color that feels good to you each time, then journal using that color. See if the emotions that come up during your journaling session resonate with the color that was calling to you.

If you want some guidance, here are some general ideas of what each major color may represent on an emotional level. But don’t let this list limit you! After all, we’re each individuals who view the world in different ways. Maybe one person’s “happy color” is another person’s “color of dread.” Play around with it. Use it as a fun opportunity to get to know yourself better this week.
