The Power of Positive Thinking
Before you roll your eyes at the gimmicky phrase and start picturing all those cheesy motivational posters, hear me out.
I’m definitely a HUGE believer that journaling should feel like a safe space where you can air all your dirty laundry and get your feels out. And at the same time, I’m a big believer that we are insanely powerful wizards who can summon things and energies into our lives. (Okay, permission granted to roll your eyes at that one…)
There’s all sorts of literature and TED Talks and even scientific studies all around the power of positive thinking. The idea that trusting that the attitude we give to the world, the world will mirror back to us.
On a strictly physical level, our thoughts are simply electrochemical events occurring in our nerves. Good thoughts stimulate dopamine and literally trigger positive peptides (strings of molecules,) which sends that happy feeling throughout our whole bodies. Negative thoughts - you guessed it, have the opposite effect.
Of course, from there you can move onto the mental, emotional, and spiritual benefits of positive thoughts. My husband was just telling me about a book he was reading where our positive thoughts actually seep into our consciouses, which are all connected as a part of EVERYTHING,) and are actually powerful enough to change the entire world. And to that I say, Why not?
I mean, why couldn't our positivity be that far-reaching and impactful? And even if you don’t believe it could be, there’s one thing you can’t deny: you feel better in ALL the ways when you’re in a positive space. Isn’t that alone worth it?
The thoughts we tell ourselves are pretty damn powerful. The end.
So yes, absolutely take the moments you need to vent all your grievances in your journal. It’s a great place to do just that. But also make sure you’re allowing plenty of space to practice positive thinking. Sticky notes with positive affirmations on your mirror (my 10-year old swears by this one.) Intentional breathing with a positive mantra. 5-minute gratitude lists. Really truly getting to a place where you trust that things will work out how they’re meant to.
I bet you’ve long since worked out what our journaling theme is this week…
