Music is the Sky Light to the Soul
If people say your eyes are the windows into your soul, I say your ears are the skylights… or something like that…
Dorky metaphor aside, music is so powerful. It can be nostalgic. When we hear a song we loved as a kid, we’re taken back to that time in a beat. It can help us describe our emotions, or even our identity. It can be therapeutic. When we explore our musical roots and preferences, we can learn so much about ourselves.
For me, music has been an essential part of my being since the day I was born. My parents’ initial attraction to each other was thanks to music. My childhood was flooded with the stuff. From classical to classic rock and every possible iteration in between. Different eras, styles, and volumes depending on the mood of the moment. And when we weren’t listening to music of some sort, we were filling the space with our own art. To this day, my family reunions still include impromptu jam sessions, where we pull out pianos, guitars, flutes, vocals, and any other instrument one of us is experimenting with at any given time.
Music in all sorts of different presentations has just always existed in my world. It's a form of expression. Release. Creativity. Connection. And Therapy.
Now, I’m not one to make definitive statements, but I know you’ve felt these things through music, too. Maybe you’ve been moved by poetic song lyrics or a swelling instrument line. Or even felt a piece of yourself described in a song. And you can’t tell me you haven’t experienced some major release while belting out a song at full blast in the car. Music is frickin’ powerful. It can speak to the deepest parts of us, and move us in the most visceral way.
As my daughters get older, I’m loving watching them discover music more and more in their own ways. There’s a crazy cool feeling that fills my heart when they excitedly share a newly discovered artist or song with me (even if that “discovered” artist is an oldie like Nirvana…) Even better is when they share how that music speaks to them. Or when we get to go see a concert where we get to belt out song lyrics live alongside the actual artist. Expression. Release, Creativity. Connection. And Therapy.
What about you? When was the last time you felt jazzed up (I’m so punny,) about music? When was the last time you felt music as a form of expression? Release? Creativity? Connection? And Therapy?
For your journaling this week, I invite you to explore that question. To focus on the power of music in your life. Have fun with it. Ask yourself questions like: what’s my favorite song and why? What’s my LEAST favorite song, and why? First concert? Favorite concert? Style that speaks to me? Last time I belted out in the shower and how did it make me feel? Do you enjoy performing? Swaying or dancing to music? What’s your musical release?
It’s fun to think about, right? And again, music a window…errr…skylight to your soul, so thinking about your relationship with music can actually be extremely insightful to learning and loving more about yourself.
So go crank up (or play softly) whatever music is speaking to you right now. Get nostalgic. Own your musical preferences; they shed a light onto who you are.
Happy journaling!
